Most areas in this country are cold and dreary during December. If people aren't dealing with snow, then cold rain and freezing temperatures are the conditions putting a damper on the festivities. With this in mind, consider having a Hawaiian party. A tropical theme is a fantastic Christmas party theme. Throw in some grass skirts, topical cocktails, and Hawaiian Christmas music. Your guests will love the change of pace and the thought of warmer weather to come. An internet search would provide a lot of great ideas for menu and decoration planning.
A more traditional, yet unique, take on a Christmas party theme would be to pick one aspect of the holiday to highlight. For example, if you are a snowman nut, plan your party around that theme. Another Christmas party theme to consider would be a craft party. Gather all kinds of crafting supplies, some instructions for Christmas ornaments and decorations. This would be a great party for a snowy afternoon. Serve eggnog, hot cocoa, and cookies. It doesn't get anymore Christmas-like than that.
